HAZARD – Though the presidential election will be the main focus across the nation come November’s election, there will also be several local contests on the ballot for Perry County voters.

A handful of local races were set during the May primary, but there are several more for which candidates have until August 14 to finalize their candidacy by filing in the county clerk’s office.

Three seats will be open on the Perry County Board of Education for Districts 1 through 3. As of press time, Charlene Miller and Debbie McIntosh have filed for re-election to the board in Districts 1 and 2 respectively, and are so far without opposition. No candidates have filed to run for the board in District 3, where Jerry Stacy is currently serving.

The Hazard Independent Board of Education will also have seats up for grabs this election season. Incumbents Grady Varney and Lisa Townes have both filed for re-election, while Ralph Asher, who was appointed to the board last year, will be seeking his first full term in office.

Five people will be seeking four open seats on the Hazard City Commission. Commissioners Jimmy Lindon, Donald “Happy” Mobelini and Dr. Fitz Gilbert will all be seeking re-election. First-time candidates Ricky Steele and William “Bill” Hall will also be vying for a seat. Current Commissioner Lou Ella Farler announced earlier this year that she would not seek another term.

Other races this year will include seats on the city commissions for Vicco and Buckhorn, while the Vicco mayor’s office will also be up for grabs. No candidates had filed for those races as of press time.

Races for the offices of commonwealth’s attorney and circuit clerk will also be on the ballot in November, both of which were set during the primary in May. Democrat Teresa Reed will be squaring off against Republican John Hansen for the commonwealth’s attorney’s office, and Charles Patterson, a Democrat, will be looking to defeat Republican Tom Eckert for the circuit clerk’s office.
