The Hazard Bulldogs traveled to Somerset on Friday to take on the Briar Jumpers in just their second football game of the season. Hazard fell behind early, but rallied to make a game of it until the final drive of the game.


Things went all Somerset’s way in the opening period. The Briar Jumpers put together two strong drives and stopped the Bulldogs several times with their defense. At the end of the first period, Somerset had the 14-0 lead.


The second period belonged to the Bulldogs. Hazard was able to control the Somerset offense and take advantage of a couple of Briar Jumper miscues on defense.


The Bulldogs picked up their first touchdown when Evan Whitaker found Nathan Higgins with a short pass. Higgins then took the ball another 60 yards for the touchdown (14-6).


Hazard picked up a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, and started deep in Somerset territory. The Bulldogs pushed the ball down to the five-yard line, but the Briar Jumper’s defense stood strong, and Hazard had to settle for a Kevin Eversole field goal (9-14).


The second half turned into a defensive struggle, and neither team got close to the end zone. The only points in the half came off a Somerset field goal. The score put the score at 9-17.


Hazard had a couple of opportunities late in the game, but came up empty-handed. The final came with about with minutes remaining, and ended with the Bulldogs turning the ball over on downs with 1:06.


Somerset ran out the clock, and came away with the 17-9 win.
