HAZARD – Property owners in Perry County should have already received their tax bills in the mail this year, and officials say they should also be sure to take a close look if they want to take advantage of the early payment discount.

In addition to law enforcement duties, in Kentucky sheriff’s offices are also tasked with the collection of property taxes that go to fund operations at the city and county school districts, as well as the fiscal court and other governmental agencies. The sheriff’s office mailed out the bills this year in October, which Chief Deputy Tony Eversole noted is a month earlier than normal. As a result, the early payment discount is also being offered a month earlier.

Property owners who pay their taxes during the first month available can do so with a 2 percent discount, which in recent years has always been November. But this year that early month is October. Payments made after this month but before the beginning of the new year will be accepted without a discount, while payment thereafter will be assessed a penalty.

“November and December will both be face value. In January we’ll start the penalty,” Eversole explained. “October is the only month that they can pay their taxes and get the 2 percent discount.”

Eversole added that anyone in Perry County who wants to take advantage of the discount needs to get their payments into the sheriff’s office before Nov. 1. Taxpayers can make payments by mail or in person at the sheriff’s office any weekday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The sheriff’s mobile tax unit is also open for business on the Hazard Bypass beside 1st Trust Bank between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
