Bulldogs keep on rolling through playoffs
by Tony McGuire
The Hazard Bulldogs (7-3) hosted their second playoff game of the postseason on Friday. The Bulldogs welcomed in the Pineville Mountain Lions (6-5), exploding out of the gate, and with the continuous clock in motion as the second half started.
Hazard received the ball to start the game, and quickly went to work. The Bulldogs marched the ball downfield via the run, and concluded the drive with a 10-yard run by Brandon Jones (7-0).
The Bulldog defense stymied the Mountain Lions on their first possession, holding them without a first down. The defensive stand set Hazard up well within the Pineville territory. Again, Brandon Jones finished off the drive, this time with a 14-yard run (14-0).
Pineville looked ready to go on their next possession, but coughed the ball up. In the scrum, Nathan Higgins was able to pick up the ball and race 12 yards to the end zone (21-0).
The Hazard defense continued to be impenetrable in the second period. Time after time, the defense set the offense up with excellent field position.
On the Bulldogs’ first play from scrimmage in the second period, Nathan Higgins took the ball and was immediately met by several Pineville players. Somehow, Higgins broke away from all would-be tacklers and raced 64 yards to pay dirt (27-0).
Down the stretch, the Bulldogs would feed the Mountain Lions a steady diet of Brandon Jones. Jones rolled over the Pineville defense, collecting three more touchdowns (31, 8 and 14 yards). The touchdowns gave Jones five total for the first half, and gave the Bulldogs the points necessary for a continuous clock in the second half (47-0).
The Bulldogs went to their bench to complete the second half, giving everyone some playoff experience. Pineville was able to score a couple of touchdowns, allowing them to avoid the shutout. Hazard went on to win the game by the final tally of 47-14.
The Bulldogs improved their season record to 8-3. They will host the 11-1 Williamsburg Yellow Jackets this week.
