GORDON, Ky. – A Letcher County man was shot and killed Wednesday following what police described as a verbal altercation.

Troopers with Kentucky State Police responded to the scene in the Gordon community on the evening of Nov. 21 after a caller reported that someone was attempting to break into a residence, according to a KSP press release.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a man identified as 37-year-old Wayne Duff, of Cumberland, Ky., was confronted by another man identified as James Brown. It was during a verbal altercation that police say Duff began to approach Brown, and Brown fired one shot from a handgun, striking Duff in the chest.

Duff was later pronounced dead at the scene by a representative of the Letcher County Coroner’s Office.

Police say no charges have been filed, though the case will be presented to the Letcher Country Grand Jury.
