The Perry County Central Commodores began their WYMT Whayne Supply Mountain Classic title run last Wednesday with the Clay County Tigers. The Commodores played steady defense throughout, but struggled to get their shots to fall. They were, however, able to recover in the closing moments, and pulled out the win to move on in the tournament.
Perry Central started quickly and enjoyed a small lead early. However, they would soon cool off, allowing Clay County to take the lead. At the horn, the Tigers were up 17-13.
The pace slowed considerably in the second period, with the Commodores getting the preponderance of the shots. However, they were still having trouble getting their shots to fall. They were in danger of going into the locker room down double digits, but a “3” by Justin Johnson at the horn sent them into the break trailing 27-22.
Very little changed in the third period, with the Commodores shaving a single point off their deficit in the period. This left Perry Central needing to make up four points (37-34) in the remaining eight minutes.
Perry County’s strength began to take its toll on the Tigers in the final period, and the deficit eventually disappeared. The Commodores took the lead for good with a little over a minute left on the clock. They were able to move on in tournament play with the 46-43 win.
