HAZARD — A Perry County Central student has been brought up on charges of drug trafficking on school grounds.
Kayla Rankin, 18, was arrested Thursday, and is charged with trafficking in less than 8 ounces of marijuana, a misdemeanor. She was alleged to have sold the drug to another student in the gallery of the high school during school hours, according to the police report, which lists the time of arrest at 8:44 a.m. The incident was reported to have been caught on video tape.
Rankin, a member of the girls’ basketball team, was released on her own recognisance on Thursday. As conditions of her release, she is to submit to random drug testing, have no new arrests or violations, and is to follow a strict curfew from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., except on nights she has ballgames.
Rankin is among the state's best girls' basketball players, ranking in the top 15 in both points and rebounds per game so far this season. Her arraignment has been set for Feb. 4.
