HAZARD – Water service was restored late Tuesday night to most businesses and households near the hospital following a significant waterline break on Morton Blvd., though a boil water advisory will remain in effect for that area until at least Thursday afternoon.

Hazard City Manager Carlos Combs said it is unclear what caused the leak in a line running along Morton Blvd., but it temporarily caused a loss of service to the Hazard hospital on Tuesday. Two fire trucks were employed to transport water to the holding tanks so that warm water could circulate in the hospital’s heating system.

City workers were able to clamp the leak and restore service to the area at approximately 11:30 p.m. Tuesday to all customers except the Ponderosa restaurant, though Combs said service should be restored there Wednesday morning.

In the meantime, all water customers on Morton Blvd., Roy Campbell Drive, Rock Ridge, Argyll Circle, and Highland Drive are advised to boil their water before use. According to Combs, that area of the city accounts for approximately 100 meters, including the hospital.

“There will be a boil water advisory probably until late afternoon (on Thursday),” Combs said, noting that water samples have been sent for analysis to rule out any threat of bacterial contamination.
