The Viper Hornets and the Big Creek Bobcats opened the 8th grade county tournament last week. The game was close in the first half, with the Hornets pulling away for the 48-31 win.

Big Creek controlled the tempo in the early going, while Viper struggled to find their range. The Bobcats finished the period with the 7-4 lead.

Viper began to pick up the pace in the second period, and eventually erased their deficit. Going into the break, the Hornets were on top 15-13.

The two teams went in different directions in the third period. Viper picked up the pace and more than doubled their tally, while Big Creek suffered their lowest output of the game. The Hornets went into the final frame with the 32-17 lead.

The Bobcats;s offense reemerged in the fourth quarter, but it would be too little, too late. The Hornets continued to roll in the period, and went on to the 48-31 win, placing them in the second round.

Dillon Fields finished the game with 23 points for Big Creek, while Logan Hamm matched that total for the Hornets.

Viper (48) Logan Hamm 23, Mikey Bowling 6, Cody Wells 8, Cory Messer 4, Keith Caudill 3, Koby Holbrook 1, Mikey Foster 1 and Mason Rice 2.

Big Creek (31) Dillon Fields 23, Ian Spurgeon 2, Chase Mullins 3, and Dustin Fields 3.
