I just read something beautiful in the New York Times online. It was a story about Vicco having passed a ban on discrimination of people based on gender identity.
I am a straight 71-year-old retired 7th and 8th grade school teacher who often knew when a student of mine was gay. Many times even before they did. I ached for them when others expressed hostility or disapproval and would not tolerate it in my classroom. Still, one of my male students committed suicide in later years; I still grieve for him and his family.
I also grew up in a tiny mid-western town not much bigger than Vicco, so I know the courage it takes for people to vote their conscience in matters like these. The citizens of Vicco have done Kentucky proud; they serve as a wonderful model for the rest of the country. And right now, they make me proud to be an American.
