The Perry County Central Commodores played host to the Knott County Central Patriots on Thursday in a match-up that would nearly go down to the wire. The Commodores won the first meeting between the two teams, claiming the WYMT Mountain Classic title.
Perry Central came out strong and quickly took the 9-2 lead. Knott County was able to get back on track midway through the period, but it was the Commodores that ended the frame with the 19-12 lead. Play evened out in the second period, with the Commodores edging the Patriots 20-19, sending Perry Central to the locker room with the 39-31 advantage.
Perry Central continued to control the tempo in the third period, and finished with the 54-42 lead. The Commodores pushed the margin to 17 points with five minutes left to play.
At the midway point of the final period, Knott Central decided to make Perry Central win the game from the free throw line, and began fouling the Commodores on every possession. Perry Central made their free throws at first, but began to slack off in the waning minutes.
At one point, Perry Central missed eight consecutive free throws, allowing Knott Central to cut the lead to five points with only seconds remaining. The Commodores got back on track, and closed out the game from the line, taking the 80-73 win.
