KCTCS approves tuition hike for new year
HAZARD – Full time faculty and staff with the Kentucky Community and Technical College System, of which Hazard Community and Technical College belongs, can expect an increase in salary in the new fiscal year, though students can also expect to pay more for tuition.
The KCTCS Board of Regents approved the system’s new $928,704,000 budget during its quarterly meeting in June. Students living in Kentucky while attending a KCTCS institution will see a hike in their tuition beginning in the 2013-14 fiscal year. In-state students can expect an increase of 2.86 percent at a rate of $144 per credit hour, up from last year’s rate of $140.
Out-of-state students will also see a tuition increase. Students living outside of the state, but in bordering counties, will pay $288 per credit hour, up from $280. All other out-of-state students will pay $504 per credit hour which represents an increase from $490 during the previous year.
Despite the increases, which are in line with recommendations from the Council for Postsecondary Education, officials say students enrolled at KCTCS schools are getting their money’s worth.
“KCTCS remains committed to providing Kentuckians with a quality education that is both affordable and convenient,” said Peeples. “Our statewide system of 16 colleges and more than 70 campuses continues to be the best postsecondary education value in the state.”
Additionally, staff and faculty at KCTCS schools will receive an increase in pay this year based on a recommendation by KCTCS President Michael McCall. Each regular full-time faculty or staff member will receive an increase of two percent or $1,000, whichever is larger, provided that the employee meets or exceeds his or her job requirement on their evaluations, according to a KCTCS release. Officials plan to fund the increases through “existing funding bases.”
