Mimia Shepherd, born July 23, 1923, departed this life on Thursday, July 23, at the Hazard Appalachian Regional hospital. She was 86 years of age at the time of her passing.

Mimia was born at Big Creek, Kentucky, the daughter of the late George Standafer and the late Melda Jane Vanover Standafer. She was a life-long resident of Perry County and was a homemaker by occupation and enjoyed sewing.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Matt Shepherd, and one daughter, Veda Shepherd Smith.

She is survived by sons Leonard Shepherd, Arko Shepherd, Prentiss Shepherd, all of Avawam, Lenvel Shepherd of Ohio; daughters Magdalene Whitaker of Hindman and Reda Lewis of Amburgey, Kentucky; brother Obrene Standafer of Hazard; sister Lillian Terry of Chicago; 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Engle-Walker Funeral Home on East Main Street on Saturday, July 25 with Reverend James Cornett and Reverend Rodney Eversole officiating. Burial followed in the Kilburn Cemetery located at Avawam.
