But this rally wasn’t about bringing like-minded people together as much as it was to begin spreading the word that the cap and trade bill is on its way to going from an unthinkable nightmare to an absurd reality. The bill, which narrowly passed the U.S. House in June, seeks in part to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but it will really cripple the coal industry beyond belief.
Increased power bills are just the start of the ramifications that this bill would have on middle-class America. This administration is keen to promote itself as being for the working man, but how can this bill even be considered if that’s truly the case?
Unfortunately for Perry County, this new administration isn’t shy about its ambition to eliminate fossil fuels and subsequently wreak havoc for middle class America.
Should we be surprised that the bill’s co-author is a Democrat from California? If there’s any one state that’s oblivious to reality it’s California. Perhaps a ‘sin’ tax on Hollywood actors, actresses and producers would help the economy. Rep. Henry Waxman, D-California, probably wouldn’t be too keen on that. Even former Clinton advisor Dick Morris says the bill will double utility bills for those of us in, as he puts it, a “coal-fired” region.
This administration shouldn’t be helping some states (see Michigan and the Cash for Clunkers program) and then slamming Kentucky’s main economic engine.
Not only should you voice your opinion to any politician you can get a hold of, but you should also tell your neighbor and encourage them to make their voices heard. If you can attend the coal rally in Washington, D.C., start making your reservations.
We need to send a message loud and clear that this administration needs to listen to the people and stop looking at the polls. It needs to do the right thing for the economy and the people of the entire country – not just California.
