SCOTTSBURG, In. – Two men who authorities say escaped from a jail work release program in Perry County last month are back in custody this week in Scott County, Indiana.

Lt. Detective Mike Nichols with the Scottsburg Police Department confirmed Monday that 25-year-old Garfield Herald and 23-year-old Willie Lewis were arrested on the morning of October 10 after being located sleeping inside a stolen car at a local park in Scottsburg, about 30 miles north of Louisville.

According to authorities in Perry County, Herald and Lewis escaped from jail custody while working as part of a work detail cutting weeds at Twin Rocks Bible Camp in Viper on September 29.

Authorities launched a search for the two moments later, and a police K-9 picked up on their scent before losing the trail at a roadway. Police said it was likely that they caught a ride once they reached the road.

The two apparently made their way north in the days that followed. Lt. Det. Nichols explained that he was patrolling the area in Scottsburg where Herald and Lewis were arrested when he noticed a car with out-of-town plates and its motor running sitting in the park. Nichols said when he ran the license plate he discovered the car had been reported stolen from Hazard, and after questioning the two men inside learned they were also wanted by police in Perry County.

“After questioning one of them about how they came about this car, one had admitted that he escaped from authorities down in Hazard,” said Nichols.

Nichols said he confirmed that Herald and Lewis were wanted by authorities in Perry County after contacting the Hazard Police Department and checking NCIC, a national database of wanted persons.

Herald and Lewis are currently lodged in the Scott County Jail. Kentucky River Regional Jail Administrator Tim Kilburn said the paperwork to have Herald and Lewis transported back to the jail in Hazard has been faxed to the appropriate agencies.

Both men were originally in jail on theft related charges.
