Commodores fall hard to Colonels

On Friday, the Perry County Central Commodores hosted the Whitley County Colonels on Homecoming night. It was the final district match-up of the season, and the game had major playoff implications.

The game did not start well for the Commodores as they gave up a 74-yard touchdown run on the third play of the game. The Colonels, after holding the Commodores to a three-and-out, struck on another big play. With 2:04 in the first quarter, Whitley County picked up the 64-yard touchdown run (13-0).

Whitley County struck for a pair of quick scores in the second quarter. On the first play of the period, the Colonels picked up a 59-yard pass play (21-0), and with 5:54 remaining in the half they got a 12-yard pass, giving them the 29-0 lead.

The Commodores started their next drive near midfield after a strong return by Jay White. On the first play from scrimmage, Jordan Amis hit Darryl Beatty on a 62-yard play. The extra-point was no good, setting the score at 29-6.

The Colonels got the ball back with 57 seconds on the clock. Whitley County made good use of the time and tacked another touchdown on the board. The Colonels pushed the ball downfield quickly and capped the drive with a 5-yard run. They went into the half with the 37-6 lead.

Perry Central opened the second half with a 51-yard kickoff return by Jay White. The return set the Commodores up on the Whitley County 37-yard line. On the first play, Jordan Amis hit Darryl Beatty on a 37-yard pass play for the score (37-12).

Whitley County responded with three consecutive touchdowns. The blitz left the Commodores reeling, and trailing 56-12.

With two seconds remaining on the clock, Jay White returned the kickoff 85-yards for the touchdown. The Commodores were unsuccessful on the conversion, setting the score at 56-18.

Whitley County finished off the game and the Commodores with a fourth quarter touchdown. The Colonels took the 63-18 lead on a 5-yard run.

The loss dropped the Commodores to fourth place in the district, matching them with Pulaski County in the first round of the playoffs.

Rushing: Brian Rankin 11 carries for 33 yards, and Jordan Amis 8 carries for 39 yards. Passing: Jordan Amis 6 of 21 for 166 yards and 2 TDs. Receiving: Darryl Beatty 3 catches for 146 yards and 2 TDs, Chance Ashworth 2 catches for 14 yards, and Brian Rankin 1 catch for 6 yards. Kickoff returns: Jay White 7 returns for 226 yards and 1 TD (school record). Defense: Josh Jones 13 tackles, Devin Turner 12 tackles, Jacob Tucker 9 tackles, John Sams 8 tackles, Eric Hughes 7 tackles, Alan Boggs 6 tackles, Justin Robinson 6 tackles, Chance Ashworth 5 tackles, Kegan Robinson 5 tackles, Corey Martin 5 tackles, Austin Pray 4 tackles, Cody Campbell 2 tackles, Jay White 1 tackle, Brain Rankin 1 tackle, Jared Deaton 1 tackle, Mitch Smith 1 tackle, and Harrison Melton 1 tackle.
