HAZARD – Parents of children in the Perry County School System will once again have an option of electing someone new in the 5th educational district in this year’s general election on Nov. 2.

Charlie Frazier will be running against John C. “Punkin” Combs in this year’s election. Though Frazier has never held public office, he has some previous experience in an election. He ran an unsuccessful campaign for school board during the 2006 contest.

Frazier said the Perry County School system needs a lot of improvement and change, and that he feels he “stands a better chance” of bringing that improvement and change to the school system.

“Society is changing and education requirements are changing,” Frazier said. “I want to make sure that our children are not left out or left behind.”

He said he has nothing negative to say about his opponent, and that he is running because he still has children involved in the school system.

“When I’m facing my children, I want to be able to tell them I did everything I could do to improve their school system,” Frazier said.

John C. Combs is currently serving as chairman of the Perry County Board of Education, and told the Herald last month that he will be seeking another term on the board, though as of press time he has yet to file in the clerk’s office.

The Hazard Independent School System also has two people in the running for school board in November for at-large memberships: Dennis R. Smith and Aster “Cat” Sizemore. Both men are current members of the board and will be seeking re-election.
