Rita Back

Rita Noble Back, 70, of Vicco, died Monday, May 13, 2019, at Hazard ARH.

She was born May 8, 1949, the daughter of the late Ova Noble and the late Omeda Noble Estep.  She was a retired school clerk and a member of Vicco Worship Center.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Leah Kay Raichel.

She is survived by her husband, Ernest Back of Vicco; two sons, Feller (Diane) Back and Bill (Angie) Back, both of Vicco; five grandchildren, Ashley (Al) Holland of Pikeville, Eric (Taylor) Back of Vicco, Whitney Back (Eric Tucker) of Willow Springs, Ill., Amanda Back of Vicco, and Noah Back of Vicco; two great grandchildren, Havyn Back and Ali Holland; three sisters, Jean (Otis) Vance of Hindman, Carol (Tommy) Mullins of Hindman, and Ann (Barkley) Estep of Louisville; one brother, Darrell (Judy) Estep of Viper; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at the Vicco Worship Center with Ronald Davidson officiating.  Arrangements were under the direction of Watts Funeral Home of Jackson.

Mary Etta Burton, 62, of Hazard, died Friday, May 17, 2019, at her residence.

Michael Davis

Michael Scott Davis, 39, of Sassafras, died Saturday, May 11, 2019.

He was born October 30, 1979, the son of Jimmy and Sheila Hubbard.  He enjoyed spending his time watching Nascar racing, U.K. Basketball and going fishing.  Most of all he was known for leading a helping hand to those who needed it.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by one daughter, Kearstyn Lynn Davis; three brothers, Jimmy Lee Hubbard Jr. (Magan), Brad Davis, Austin Hubbard; nephew, Preston Shane Davis; niece, Kaylee Alexis Hubbard; and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 17, at the Maggard’s Mtn. View Chapel with Donald Pratt officiating.  Burial followed in the Mountain Memory Gardens, Hindman.  Arrangements were under the direction of Maggard’s Mtn. View Chapel of Hazard.

Joann Day

Joann Day, 70, of Hazard, died Thursday, January 10, 2019, at the Greg & Noreen Wells Hospice Care Center.

Elmer Dobson

Elmer Ray Dobson, 72, of Knott County, died Tuesday, May 14, 2019, at the Hazard ARH.

He was born October 28, 1946, the son of the late Lowell Dobson and the late Mercetis Dobson.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Dobson; one brother, Golden Dobson; and one sister, Gene Myers.  He enjoyed Bluegrass Music, Racing, and loved spending time with this family.  He was a United States Army Veteran having served in Vietnam.

He is survived by two sons, Eddie Earl Dobson (Patricia) of Tenn., Brian Scott Dobson of Hazard; one sister, Daisy Duff of Vine Grove; three grandchildren; one great grandchild; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 18, at the Engle Cemetery, with Jack Carter officiating.  Arrangements were under the direction of Engle-Bowling Funeral Home of Hazard.

Judith McGee

Judith Ann McGee, 75, of Crab Orchard, W.Vir., died Thursday, May 16, 2019 following a long illness.

She was born February 3, 1944 in Hazard, she was the daughter of the late Deward and the late Iona Wills Fowler.  She was a retired bookkeeper working in the coal industry.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard McGee; brother, Adran Fowler and sister, Emma Roark.

She is survived by her son, James McGee (Laura) and brothers, Robert and James Fowler.

Following Judith’s wishes she will be cremated. There will be no services.  Arrangements were under the direction of Calfee Funeral Home.

Brenda Pence

Brenda Cornett Pence, 60, of Dwarf, died Monday, May 20, 2019, at Hazard ARH.

She was born June 11, 1958, the daughter of the late John Cornett and the late Ruby Pratt Cornett.  For the past 15 years she worked as a sales associate for the Hazard Walmart.  She attended the Dwarf Baptist Church.  She loved spending her free time with her grandchildren and playing on her IPAD.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one grandson, Gregory Ketron.

She is survived by her husband, David Pence; six daughters, Amanda Ketron (Charles) of Hazard, Leah Joseph of Hazard, Missy McClelland (Don) of Louisa, Teva Watts (Tyler) of Hardburly, Jennifer Brock (James) of Wooton, Miranda Reed (Devin) of Jeff; three brothers, John Cornett of Willard, Michael Cornett (Viola) of Newport, Tim Cornett of Hazard; one sister, Tammy Campbell of Combs; 17 grandchildren; three loving friends, Pat, Ginger and Carol Mae; and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 24, at the Maggard’s Mtn. View Chapel with Randy Combs officiating.  Burial will follow at the Hardburly Cemetery, Bulan.  Arrangements were under the direction of Maggard’s Mtn. View Chapel of Hazard.

“Kathy” Wolford

Mary Kathlene “Kathy” Wolford, 68, of Bulan, died Sunday, May 19, 2019, at Hazard ARH.

She was born in Tribbey, December 29, 1950; she was the daughter of the late Silas Ritchie and the late Marie Smith Ritchie.  She was a member of the Maple Street Church of God, worked as a clerk for Hazard ARH, and in her spare time she enjoyed swimming, camping, her flowers and porch swinging.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Dusty Wolford; one son, Jerry Ritchie; as well as a host of siblings.

She is survived by four daughters, Jamie Carawan (Steve) of Greenup, Candra Sizemore (Doug) of Rowdy, Priscilla Collins (Charlie) of Hardburly, Melonie Williams (Gene) of Hiner; two brothers, Hershel Ritchie (Mildred) of Dwarf, Eugene Ritchie of Tribbey; nine grandchildren, Josh (Sara) Chandler, Jordan (Megan) Chandler, Kenneth Bub Hoskins, Javen Hoskins, Deana Hurt, Roy Sizemore, Chantella Collins, Chelsea Collins and Sean Williams; special niece, Teresa Sparks (Tim); as well as a host of family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 23, at the Maggard’s Mtn. View Chapel with Mike Smith, Joseph Engle and Karen Campbell officiating.  Burial will follow in the Family Cemetery, Dwarf.  Arrangements were under the direction of Maggard’s Mtn. View Chapel of Hazard.
