Freddie Combs

Freddie Combs, 78, of Hazard, died Friday, August 2, 2019, at the Greg and Noreen Wells Hospice Care Center.

He was born August 29, 1940, the son of the late Chester Combs ad the late Janie Williston Combs Brashear.  He was a United States Air Force Veteran, a member of the Krypton Masonic Lodge 905, a Shiner and served as District 2 Magistrate for 20 years.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Clara Combs; one son, Jerry Randall Combs of Frankfort; one sister, Judy Kidd of Richmond; one brother, Tony Combs of Ary; two grandchildren, Lauren Kyleigh Parker (Cody), Aspen Blake Combs; and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, August 5, at the Maggard’s Mtn. View Chapel with Paul Couch and Ellen Peach officiating.  Entombment was at Mountain Memorial Gardens, Hazard.  Arrangements were under the direction of Maggard’s Mtn. View Chapel of Hazard.

Freda Kilburn

Dr. Freda Lou Patterson Kilburn, 80, of Morehead, died Thursday morning, August 1, 2019 at Baptist Health – Lexington after a brief illness.

She was born on July 17, 1939 in Hazard, the daughter of the late John and Lottie White Patterson. She was retired from Morehead State University, where she was a professor of nursing.  She was a graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Nursing and received her PHD in nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She was a member of the Midland First Church of God, Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Theta Tau and the Honorary Society of Nursing. She loved quilting, reading, traveling, knitting and crocheting and she was an avid University of Kentucky Wildcat fan. She was a well known quilter and had received numerous awards for the quilts she made.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Kilburn and two brothers, Charles Patterson and Wilson Ray Patterson.

She is survived by two sons, Ira Kilburn (Amby) of Salt Lick and Tim Kilburn (June) of Hazard;  one grandson, Caleb Kilburn of Louisville; four brothers, Tom Patterson, Herbie Patterson and Dickie Patterson all of Hazard and Roy Patterson of Myrtle Beach; one sister, Sharon Caudill of Corbin and a host of nieces, nephews and special friends.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 A.M. Monday, August 5, 2019 in the chapel of the Michael R. Gray Funeral Home in Morehead with Pastor Bush Stevenson officiating. Burial was in the White-Francis Cemetery at Jackson.

Pallbearers were Ira Kilburn, Tim Kilburn, Caleb Kilburn, Jarrod Patterson, Charlie Patterson, Roy Patterson, II, John Albert Patterson, Josh Patterson and Mike Caudill.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the Dr. Freda Kilburn Scholarship Fund, C/O MSU, Foundation Inc., Morehead State University, 121 East Second Street, Morehead, Kentucky  40351.

The Michael R. Gray Funeral Home in Morehead cared for all arrangements.

Neda Napier

Neda Jean Napier, 61, of Hazard, died Tuesday, July 30, 2019 at the U.K. Medical Center in.

She was born on February 19, 1958, the daughter of Luna Stacy Sizemore and the late William Sizemore.  She was a seamstress for many years. She enjoyed gardening, planting flowers and listening to many types of music. She was a member of Talcum Mennonite Church.

In addition to her mother she is survived by her husband of 42 years, Stevenson Napier; daughter, Tracy Stacy (John) of Hazard; son, Brian James Napier (Rachel) of Ga.; sister, Shannon Gabbard (Randy) of Knot County; brother, Billy Sizemore (Marie) of Knott County; two grandchildren, Taylor Stacy and Tobie Stacy; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, August 3, at the Maggard’s Mtn. View Chapel with Rev. Eldon Miller, Rev. James Hamblin and Lewis Stacy officiating.  Burial followed in the Curt Napier Cemetery, Lotts Creek.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations to be made to Talcum Mennonite Church.

Raymond “Big Jr” Standafer, 55, of Hyden, died Wednesday, July 31, 2019, at Greg and Noreen Wells Hospice Care Center.

He was born July 11, 1964, the son of the late Raymond Standafer Sr., and the late Arlene Terry Standafer.  He was a former employee of the KY River Regional Animal Shelter.  He enjoyed spending his free time fishing, going to the ocean, gun trading, chicken fighting but most importantly spending time with his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Kathy Cline; and three brothers, Calvin, George and Ricky Standafer.

He is survived by his wife, Valerie Standafer; three daughters, Brittany Sandlin (David) of Hyden, Ashley Standafer (Dusty) of Wooton, Aryanna Standafer of Hyden; three brothers, Everette Standafer (Ann), Wayne Standafer, Russell Standafer; two grandchildren, Laura Jane Baker and Killian Ray Sandlin; special friends, Jackie Fugate and Tiffany Sizemore.

A Celebration of Life service was held at 6 p.m. Friday, August 2, at the Maggard’s Mtn. View Chapel.  Arrangements were under the direction of Maggard’s Mtn. View Chapel of Hazard.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations to the Bluegrass Hospice Care Center.

Rita Marie Westerfield, 70, of Hazard, died Monday, August 5, 2019 at Greg and Noreen Wells Hospice Care Center.

She was born in Hazard, December 2, 1948, the daughter of the late Virgil Curtil Jarrell and the late Jewell Jarrell.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Jerry (Bo) Jarrell and James Edward Jarrell; three sisters, Norma Jean Jarrell, Estella (Essie) Stacy, and Madaleen Jarrell Hall. She loved spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Jimmy Westerfield of Hazard; son, Jimmy Westerfield III (Shannon) of Georgetown; brother, Virgil Curtis Jarrell, Jr.; four grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 9, at the Engle-Bowling Funeral Home.  Burial will follow in the Riverside Cemetery, Hazard.  Arrangements were under the direction of Engle-Bowling Funeral Home of Hazard.
