Shirley Carfrey

Shirley Caudill Carfrey, 71, of Mount Hope, W.Va., died Friday, July 5, 2019.

She was the daughter of the late Chester and Mary Caudill.  Born a coal miner’s daughter, never lost her love for the hills of Kentucky where she was born and raised. She was a faithful pastor’s wife, a loving mother and grandmother, and was loved in return by people everywhere for her contagious smile and sweet spirit. Shirley was adored at Appalachian Bible College in West Virginia, where she served as Director of Financial Aid for many years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Floyd Caudill; and a granddaughter, Danielle Williams.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, the Rev. Daniel Carfrey; a daughter and son-in-law, MarySusan C. and Brandon Williams; a grandson, Colin Williams; one brother; four sisters; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

The family received friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10, at Oakey’s North Chapel, Roanoke, VA.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, July 12, at Piney View Bible Church, Piney View, W.Va. The family will receive friends from noon until the 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Piney View Bible Church.  Arrangements were under the direction of Oakey’s Funeral Service – North Chapel, Roanoke, Va.

Richard Allen Dillion, 60, of Viper, died Friday, July 5, 2019, at the Greg & Noreen Wells Hospice Care Center.

He was born November 7, 1958, the son of the late James Frances Dillion and the late Polly Fields Dillion.  He was a retired Deputy Jailor for the Perry County Jail.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Danny, Mike and William Dillion.

He is survived by his wife, Debra Joseph Dillion; two daughters, Melissa Dillion of Viper, Regina Trent (Larry) of Powell County; two sons, Anthony Halcomb (Stacy Miller) of Vicco, Justin Joseph of Viper; three sisters, Margie Brock (Marvin) of Leslie County, Phyllis Lewis (Ed) of Booneville, Yvonne Hurt (Paul) of Viper; two brothers, David Dillion of Viper, Kernon Dillion of Viper; six grandchildren, Courtney, Jacob, Jackson, Mason, Allen Napier and Lamar Trent; special friend, Sheila Halcomb of Hazard; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 7, at the Right Fork Church of Christ with Virgil Hurt and Andrew Lewis officiating.  Burial followed in the Dillion Cemetery, Viper.  Arrangements were under the direction of Maggard’s Mtn. View Chapel of Hazard.

Roger Dale Fugate, 70, of Hazard, died Tuesday, July 2, 2019, at Hazard ARH.

He was born in Talcum, March 18, 1949, the son of the late Adam Fugate and the late Coursie Fugate.  He was a United States Army Veteran having served in the Vietnam War, Member of the Hazard-Perry County D.A.V. Chapter #64 and Hazard V.F.W.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Fugate; son, Curtis Dale Fugate, four Brothers, Wes, Quinton Ray, Raymond and Don Fugate; two sisters, Betty Brown and Gladys Campbell.

He is survived by two sons, Lewis Fugate of Hazard, Chuck (Melinda) Fugate of Hazard; two daughters, Ashley Holliday of Viper, Amber Roesel of London; four brothers, Mark Fugate of Ind., Mike Fugate of Grapevine, James Fugate of Hazard, Billy Ray Fugate of Greensburg, Ind.; two sisters, Joyce Spencer of Hazard, Florence Wooton of Wooton; seven grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 6, at the Engle-Bowling Funeral Home with Pastor Chris Fugate officiating.  Burial followed in the Resthaven Cemetery, Hazard.  Arrangements were under the direction of Engle-Bowling Funeral Home of Hazard.

He was born in Viper, April 4, 1944, the son of the late Dan Hall and the late Nellie Hall.

In addition to his parents, he was  preceded in death by five sisters, Vivian Pratt, Ernestine Fields, Sarah Williams, Rebecca Hall and Anita Hall; One Brother, Henry Hall. He was a Member of the Right Fork Community Christian Church, Loved spending time with Family & Friends, Fishing, and Playing with Grandkids, Nieces and Nephews and was a U.K. Fan.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Carolyn F. Hall of Viper; one son, Matt Hall (Shellie) of Lexington; one daughter, Casi Short (Patrick) of Viper; two brothers, Dorsie Hall of Viper, Felix Hall of Oh.; two sisters, Edith Adams of Viper, Nina Caudill of Viper; three grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at the Engle-Bowling Funeral Home with Calvin Williams officiating.  Burial will follow in the Hall Family Cemetery, Viper.  Arrangements were under the direction of Engle-Bowling Funeral Home of Hazard.

Earl Hensley

Earl Hensley, 85, died Monday, July 8, 2019 at Embassy Garden Court in Trotwood, Oh.

He was born November 16, 1934 in Hazard (Perry County) Kentucky; he was the son of John and Carrie (Hamilton) Hensley.  He was raised in Perry County, and then moved to Ohio where he spent most of his life.  He retired from Delco Moraine in Dayton after 25+ years of service and was a proud Kentucky Colonel.

Earl loved his family and was the historian, remembering dates and events with fine detail up through his final days.  He was a storyteller…he could educate everyone about the family tree, workplace, government and politics.  He loved to talk and recall the past adventures of him, his brother, cousins and friends.  He lived a colorful life, but he always loved his family.  Earl came to know Jesus Christ as his savior with forgiveness for his past.  He was looking forward to meeting again with those who had passed before him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Clifford Hensley; and long-time partner, Lois.

He is survived by his cousins and nephews.  

The graveside service will be held on Thursday, July 11, at 3:00 pm at Valley View Memorial Gardens, 170 N. Valley Rd., Xenia, OH  45385.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Opal Caudill.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Maggard; two daughters, Gina Maggard Honeycutt (Mike) of Knott County, Abigail Maggard of Perry County; two sisters, Brenda Caudill (Loye) of Blackey, Evon Gibson (Mike) of Elkhorn City; three brothers, William Halcomb (Deb) of Red Fox, David Halcomb (Jenny) of Blackey, Varge Jr. Halcomb (Peggy) of Leatherwood; four grandchildren, Jaydon, Sheldon, Landon and Kaydence; and a host of Church family, nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, at the Happy Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Rodney Smith, Rev. Jody Maggard and Rev. Terry Brewer officiating.  Burial followed in the Maggard Cemetery, Viper.  Arrangements were under the direction of Maggard’s Mtn. View Chapel of Hazard.

Visitations were held 1 pm – 4 pm Monday, July 8, at the Maggard’s Mtn. View Chapel.  Entombment was at Green Acres, Whitesburg.

She is survived by one son, Timothy “Timbo” Sumner of Vicco; two daughters, Vanessa (Kirby) Brown of Vicco, Connie Combs (Terry) of Vicco; three brothers, Cecil Williams, Jr. of Fla., Alger Williams of Vicco, Wayne Williams of Vicco; three sisters, Nora Raleigh (Elmer) of Vicco, Opal Feltner of Vicco, Peggy Baker (Keri) of Vicco; three grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Freda Faye Gabbard Adams Wiseman, 58, of Hazard, died Sunday, July 7, 2019, at the Greg and Noreen Wells Hospice Care Center.

She was born January 26, 1961, the daughter of the late Matthew Gabbard and the late Hattie Russell Gabbard.  She was a counselor for KRCC.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Wiseman; three brothers, Theo, Mikey and Kenny Gabbard; two sisters, Betty Newlin and Earnestine Melton; grandson, Atlas Adams.

She is survived by two sons, Odus J. Adams (Deborah) of Bonnyman, Kenneth M Adams (Kelly Whitaker) of Louisville; one sister, Mattie Spencer of Ill.; three brothers, Earnest Cornett of Ill, John Gabbard (Etta) of Ill, James “Blue” Gabbard (Bonnie) of Tex.; two grandchildren, Ryleigh Adams and Liam Adams; companion, Bryon Wren.

Services will be held at a later date.  Mrs. Wiseman donated her body to the University of Louisville for research in the fight against cancer.  Arrangements were under the direction of Maggard Brothers Funeral Home of Hazard.
