Juanita Burke

Juanita Catherine Burke, 69, of Slemp, died Sunday, April 14, 2019, at Hazard Health & Rehab.

She was born January 28, 1950, the daughter of the late Jack Shepherd and the late Elsie Asher Johnson.  She was a member of the Church of Christ at Slemp.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wade Burke; and one brother, Bobby Shepherd.

She is survived by one son, Tommy Asher (Delana) of Speedwell, Tenn.; two step-daughters, Diane Back (Feller) of Vicco, Angie Back (Bill) of Vicco; one grandchild, Jessica Marie Miller; one great grandchild, Jasmine Marie Miller; and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 19, at the Maggard’s Mtn. View Chapel with Billy Burke officiating.  Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery, Jeff.  Arrangements were under the direction of Maggard’s Mtn. View Chapel of Hazard.

Verlon Caudill

Verlon Eugene Caudill, 67, of Vicco, died Sunday, April 14, 2019, at Hazard ARH.

He was born January 27, 1952 in Letcher County, the son of the late Verlon Caudill and the late Edna Caudill.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Johnny Caudill; as well as one sister, Shelia Fields.

He is survived by his wife, Vallery Sumner Caudill; two daughters, Andrea Campbell of Dice, Magan Hall of Viper; three sisters, Mary Combs of Happy, Sharon Roark of Olympia, Sandy Caudill of Jeff; four brothers, Terril Caudill of Campton, Alger Caudill of Winchester, Bill Caudill of Kodak, Jackie Caudill of Vicco; three grandchildren, Kelsey Hall, Khloe Hall and Gabby Campbell; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Funeral services were held at 12 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, at the Maggard’s Mtn. View Chapel with Danny Dixon, Elwood Cornett and Michael Melton officiating.  Burial followed at the Sumner Cemetery, Georges Branch.  Arrangements were under the direction of Maggard’s Mtn. View Chapel of Hazard.

Rex Combs

Rex Combs, 75, of Russell Springs, died Saturday, April 13, 2019, at the U.K. Medical Center.

He was born November 27, 1943, the son of the late Brack Combs and the late Katherine White Combs.  He was a member of Missionary Baptist Church in Russell Springs.  He enjoyed spending his time hunting and fishing.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Caudill Combs; three daughters, Tresea Anderton of Viper, Stephanie Parrish of OH., Earletta Elkins of OH.; two sons, Vernon (Kitty) Anderton of Vicco, Charlie Combs of Viper; special grandchildren, Brandon Anderton and Brenton Anderton; seven grandchildren; special dog, Molly and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, at the Maggard’s Mtn. View Chapel with Brother Raymond Popp officiating.  Burial followed in the Riverside Cemetery, Hazard.  Arrangements were under the direction of Maggard’s Mtn. View Chapel of Hazard.

Charles Finley

Charles Edward Finley died Monday, April 8, 2019, at the Advent Health Hospital, Tavares, Fla.

He was born in Big Creek, September 26, 1932, the son of the late George W. Finley and the late Lillie Asher Finley.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Thelma Finley; one brother, Paul Finley; two sisters, Beulah Mosley and Gracie Horton.  He was a retired truck driver for Roadway Express.

He is survived by two daughters, Gail Finley of Lebanon, Oh., Charlotte Bookout of Frisco, Tex.; three sons, Eddie (Joan) Finley of Ft. Worth, Tex., Charles (Rebecca) Finley of Lebanon, Oh., Rev. William (Sue) Finley of Louisville; three brothers, Ernest Finley of Hyden, Carle Finley of Hamilton, Oh., James Finley of Tampa, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at the Engle-Bowling Funeral with Pastor Bill Finley officiating.  Burial followed in the Hurricane Cemetery, Hyden.  Arrangements were under the direction of Engle-Bowling Funeral Home of Hazard.

“Bertie” Hatfield

Roberta “Bertie” Hatfield, 91, of Hazard, died Thursday, April 11, 2019, at Hazard ARH.

She was born October 30, 1927, the daughter of the late Letcher Miller and the late Mahala Gay Miller.  She was a member of the Christopher Church of God.  She loved working in her flower garden, taking pictures of her family and spending time with her puppy Boots.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Jack Hatfield, two sisters, Mondola and May; three brothers, Lane, Paul and Moss.

She is survived by one daughter, Debbie (Jackie) Turner of Georgetown; one son, David Hatfield of Hazard; four grandchildren, Davida (Todd) Carter, Robin (Andrew) Mullins, Jason (Kelly) Turner and Andrea Turner; five great-grandchildren, Haley, Jack, Austin, Hayden and Harper; sister-in-law, Thelma Collins; best friend, Betty Jo Holliday; special friends, Johnny and Jeanette Compkis, Irene Carter, Salelia Kilburn and Roland Combs; and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 13 at the Maggard’s Mtn. View Chapel with Hershel Dixon officiating.  Burial followed in the Resthaven Cemetery, Jeff.  Arrangements were under the direction of Maggard’s Mtn. View Chapel of Hazard.

Helen Jones

Helen Jones, 83, of Hazard, died Wednesday, April 10, 2019, at the Greg & Noreen Wells Hospice Care Center.

She was born in Leslie County, January 21, 1936, the daughter of the late Monroe Napier and the late Lucy Jones Napier.  She was a homemaker, and member of the Blair Memorial Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Jones; three sister, Orpha, Mary Lou and Isabella; four brothers, Loy, Charles, Walter and Darrell; and one son-in-law, Mike Thompson.

She is survived by one daughter, Sonya Thompson of Hazard; three sons, Michael B. Jones (Tamara) of Rowdy, Greg Jones (Heather) of Lost Creek, Carlos Jones (Jennifer) of Hazard; special niece, Laura Brashear; nine grandchildren, Jason, Scott, Brittany, Paxton, Olivia, Cyleigh, Aniston, Aspyn and Mara; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at the Blair Memorial Baptist Church with Joe Engle and Emmitt Campbell officiating.  Burial followed in the Jones Family Cemetery, Lost Creek.  Arrangements were under the direction of Maggard’s Mtn. View Chapel of Hazard.

Mary Maddox

Mary Katherine Easterling Maddox, 93, of Somerset, died on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at her residence.

She was born on August 18, 1925 in Grayson, the daughter of the late Lewis and Maggie Hollingsworth Easterling.  She was a member of HighPoint Cumberland Presbyterian Church and was retired from Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital.  She loved gospel music and loved playing her guitar and singing with the Grisby Singers for many years.  

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death her husband Everett Maddox; seven brothers, Orville, Joseph, Ray, Fred, Rubert, Hubert and James; and four sisters, Bessie Young, Rena Liebbe, Mildred Easterling and Faye Rucker. 

She is survived by two daughters, Sandra K. (and James) Beaven of LaGrange and Gwen (and Mike) Adams of Somerset; two grandchildren, Jason (and Traci) Adams of Lafollette, TN and Kathy Adams of Somerset; and four great-grandchildren, Tory Adams, Jason Adams, Jr., Charlie Adams and Cole Fugate. 

A Celebration of Life Service was conducted on Saturday, March 30, 2019 at HighPoint Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Somerset, Kentucky. Arrangements were under the direction of Southern Oaks Funeral Home of Somerset.

Eric Napier, 33, died Sunday, April 14, 2019 at the Hazard ARH.

He was born in Dearborn, Mich., August 2, 1985, the son of Dana Lloyd Napier and the late Della Begley Napier.  He was a member of the Willow Fern Baptist Church and by occupation was a coal miner at TECO.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Napier; paternal grandparents, Ervin and Dallie Napier; maternal grandparents, Theo and Gladys Begley; uncle, Doye Begley.

He is survived by his wife, Carlie Chaney of Viper; two sons, Eric Dane Napier and Chase Paul Napier, both of Viper; daughter, Addyson Grace Napier of Viper; brother, Dana Lloyd Napier, Jr. of Lotts Creek; special friends, Jody Maggard, Phillip Combs, Marshall Eldridge, Jordan Seth Tennell and D.J. Hammonds; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 19, at the Willow Fern Baptist Church with Pastor Jody Maggard officiating.  Burial will follow in the Napier-Haley Cemetery, Viper.  Arrangements were under the direction of Engle-Bowling Funeral Home of Hazard.

Jack L. Napier, 69, died Saturday, April 13, 2019, at the U.K. Medical Center.

He was born in Hazard, August 27, 1949, the son of the late Joe Napier and the late Agnes Adams.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in the death by one sister, Joanne Napier.  He was a member of the Hazard Masonic Lodge #676.

He is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Sarah Napier of Viper; two sons, Jay Napier (Vonna) of London, Tony Napier (Krissey) of London; daughter, Tammy Neace (Earl) of Krypton; brother, James Adams (Tracie) of Col.; four sisters, Sue (Bob) Wells of Oh., Irma (tot) Robbins of Va., Carol Carpenter of KY., Twyla (Kevin) Frasher of Oh.; special sister and brother-in-law, Gwen and Mike, Karen and J.C.; six grandchildren; one great grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, uncles and aunts.

Funeral services were held at 12 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, at the Engle-Bowling Funeral Home with Mike Wright officiating.  Burial followed in the Ben Cornett Cemetery, Viper.  Arrangements were under the direction of Engle-Bowling Funeral Home of Hazard.

She was born February 9, 1946, the daughter of the late Wesley Fugate and the late Ethel Couch Fugate.  She was a member of The Church of Lord Jesus Christ.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Marshall Lynn Reed; one brother, Dexter Fugate; and one sister, Edna Sue Hall.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Marshall Reed; one daughter, Sondra Day (Tracy) of Hazard; one sister, Bobbie Sams of Ann Ville; two brothers, Jimmy Fugate of Lexington, Wesley Fugate Jr. of Manchester; three grandchildren, Justin Marshall Day, Cherri Noble and Robert Reed; special brothers-in-law, Gary Reed and James Reed; special friend, Sue Caudill; six great grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 19, at the Big Leatherwood Baptist Church with Brian Overbee officiating.  Entombment will be at Cornett Cemetery, Leatherwood.  Arrangements were under the direction of Maggard’s Mtn. View Chapel of Hazard.

He was born September 12, 1940, the son of the late Andrew White and the late Alice Stidham White.  He enjoyed his chewing tobacco, Elvis Presley and napping, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Martha Reynolds, Katie Sizemore and Allie Collins; four brothers, Ova White, James “Cad” White, Beecher White and Jessie White; as well as special brother-in-law, Butler Reynolds.

He is survived by one brother, Irvine White of Hazard; one special nephew, Mike Gabbard (Jena) of Hazard; two special nieces, Kathy Begley (John) of Hazard, Darlene Johnson (Johnny) of Hazard; one special great niece, Taylor Begley; and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Thursday, April 18, at the Maggard Brothers Funeral Home with A.J. Miller and Bill Gambill officiating.  Burial will follow in the Mudlick Cemetery, Grapevine.  Arrangements were under the direction of Maggard Brothers Funeral Home of Hazard.
