Hazard is ready.

Yes, the No. 1 ranked team in the state, St. X, awaits Friday in the Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Baseball State Tournament, but the Bulldogs are ready.

“Our guys are excited about the challenge ahead  of Friday,” Hazard coach John Meehan said. “St. X is the No. 1 ranked team in the state. We got to watch them twice last weekend and have scouted them, but I’m sure they scouted us too. We are excited to play and confident.”

BENTON — Fishing League Worldwide (FLW), the world’s largest tournament-fishing organization, and The Bass Federation (TBF), partnered with the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) to present the 2018 KHSAA state bass-fishing regional tournaments across the Commonwealth on Saturday. A total of 420 teams from throughout Kentucky competed in four different regional tournaments with the goal of advancing to the KHSAA State competition. Locally, the Perry Central team of Derek Brewer and Brayden Howard finished 10th in the Region 4 Tournament to advance to the state event in May. 

HAZARD — Thriving on its home field, 14th Region All “A” champion Hazard blanked visiting 13th Region All “A” champion Williamsburg 11-0 in five innings in the All “A” Sectional on Friday. 

Williamsburg batters were limited at the plate throughout the All “A” Classic game. Hazard pitcher Devin Morris threw a complete game one-hitter. 

LEXINGTON — Hazard product Jon Bentley knew his way around Rupp Arena before the Estill County Engineers arrived in Lexington for the opening round of the Boys' Sweet 16. Bentley, who played basketball at Eastern Kentucky University after graduating from Hazard High School, led the Bulldogs to a 14th Region title in 1998. Now a head coach, Bentley guided Estill County to its first-ever region championship 20 years after his triumph as a player.
