PHELPS — Hazard came out with something to prove after dropping a heartbreaker to Pikeville last week.
The Bulldogs picked up a big 35-6 district win over Phelps Thursday night.
Hazard got the football first and Skylar Pelfrey marched the ball down the field and capped off a 66-yard scoring drive with a one-yard TD plunge. After the extra-point by Jonah Helm, the Bulldogs held a 7-0 lead with 8:12 left in the first quarter.
Phelps tried to answer and marched the ball deep into Hazard territory on its next possession, but turned the ball over on downs on the Bulldogs’ 14-yard line.
The Bulldogs looked poised to score on their second possession, but Garrett Clevenger stripped the ball from Tyson Turner after a catch; Phelps’ Seth Elkins recovered.
The Hornets couldn’t do anything with the turnover, though.
Trajon Campbell then took over running duties for the Bulldogs. He scored the game’s second TD on a 17-yard run to set up a first and goal from the one-yard line. He punched the ball in on the next play with 8:20 left in the first half. That pushed the Hazard lead to 14-0 after the extra-point.
Hazard’s defense forced the Hornets to turn the ball over on downs deep in Bulldog territory on the Hornets’ next possession.
Campbell broke a 27-yard TD run with 2:54 left in the half. After the two-point conversion, Hazard held a 22-0 lead.
Phelps’ Brandon Turnmire looked like he was going to help the Hornets break onto the scoreboard with a huge gain to put Phelps in Hazard territory once again. Turnmire fumbled on the next play, though.
Campbell scored his third TD of the game with on a 30-yard run with 44 seconds left in the first half. After the extra-point, Hazard held a 29-0 lead.
Phelps moved the ball into Bulldog territory again before the half ended, but turned the ball over on downs once again.
Hazard and Phelps each added scores in the second half to set the game’s final scoreboard.
Hazard (4-2) is scheduled to host Paintsville at 7:30 p.m. next Friday night in a big Class A showdown.
Phelps (4-2) will host Pikeville in the final Class A District 8 game of the regular season. If Pikeville wins and Phelps loses, the Panthers will enter the Class A playoffs with the No. 1 seed, Hazard the No. 2 seed and Phelps the No. 3 seed. If Phelps pulls the upset win, the district will be in a three-way tie and the teams would have to use a tiebreaker to settle the playoff seeding.
