Bulldogs scratch their way to 64-57 overtime win over Breathitt County

The Hazard Bulldogs pulled off a come from behind win Tuesday night to defeat the Breathitt County Bobcats in a 64-57 ballgame during overtime.

Things would start off strong for the Bulldogs as a basket by Hazard’s Wade Pelfrey pushed the team ahead 15-13 with 34 seconds left in the first bringing an end to the first quarter.

Pelfrey led the team with 21 points and two rebounds. Pelfrey made 40 percent of his shots from the field and was five for six from the line.

Pelfrey was followed by two other Hazard players to end the game in double figures scoring, the others being Logan Hall and Reece Fletcher.

Hall ended the night with 20 points and 18 rebounds. He made 50 percent of his shots from the field and was six for nine from the line.

Fletcher ended the game with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Fletcher made 50 percent of his shots from the field and was eight for 11 from the line.

The Bulldogs began to struggle in the second quarter, and a basket by the Bobcats pushed Breathitt County ahead 16-15 with 2:57 left in the first half.

Hall and Pelfrey both went to the line for the Bulldogs scoring the team’s only points during the second quarter, but it was not be enough and the half ended with the Bobcats ahead 26-19.

Coming back into the second half, Hazard picked some momentum and began closing the gap. Hall made the first basket of the half with 7:44 left in the third quarter, then scored once again for the Bulldogs with 6:54 left in the third.

After a quick layup by Fletcher with 5:36 left in the third, the gap closed to 26-25 and the Bobcats called a timeout to come up with a plan to maintain their lead.

Breathitt County’s Jalen Taulbee came out of the break with a quick basket for the Bobcats with 5:23 left in the third, making the score 28-25.

The third quarter ended with the Bobcats ahead 35-31.

Pelfrey kicked off the fourth by sinking a three for the Bulldogs, closing the gap to 35-34 with 6:49 left in the second half.

The Bulldogs kept the gap close and Hall would go to the line for two making the score 51-52 with 14 seconds left in the second half.

Hazard would foul Breathitt allowing the Bobcats to make one from the line with 13 seconds left making the score 53-51.

In the final 10 seconds of the game Hazard worked the ball down court, passing it to Pelfrey who went up for three but missed, but, the Bulldogs rebounded and passed it to Pelfrey once again, allowing him to sink the three sending the game into overtime 54-54 as the buzzer rang.

Kicking off overtime Pelfrey sank another basket pushing Hazard ahead 56-54 for the first time since the second quarter with 1:52 left to play.

Hazard maintained that lead and win the game 64-57.
