Commodores fall in heartbreaker to Cougars

WHITESBURG — Perry Central experienced heartbreak in Week 6 of the 2019 high school football season. Host Letcher Central managed to edge Perry Central 21-20 in a Class 4A, District 8 football game on Friday, Sept. 27.

With the loss, Perry Central dropped to 0-5 overall and 0-1 in Class 4A, District 8.

Letcher Central improved to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the district with the win.

Hunter Campbell led the Cougars to the victory, rushing nine times for 116 yards and one touchdown. In addition to thriving on the ground, Campbell hauled in a 51-yard scoring reception.

Quarterback Carson Adams finished second in rushing for Letcher County Central, taking a dozen carries for 56 yards.

Another running back, Alex Blair, added a rushing touchdown for Letcher Central in the victory.

Adams completed one of six passes for a 51-yard touchdown for the Cougars.

Prior to falling short, Perry Central pushed Letcher Central throughout the district matchup.

Mason Rice led Perry County Central, rushing 33 times for 180 yards and two touchdowns. Through the air, Rice hauled in three receptions for 35 yards.

Quarterback Chanse McKenzie helped to pace Perry County Central, completing 11 of 16 passes for 133 yards and one touchdown.

Cameron Fugate paced Perry Central in receiving, reeling in three receptions for 53 yards and one touchdown.

Defensively for Perry County Central, Rice recorded seven tackles.

Chipping in for Perry Central on the defensive side, Ashton Rice recorded an interception.

Perry Central entered the week with regular-season games remaining versus Lee (Va.), Johnson Central, Clay County, Harlan County and Williamsburg. The Commodores are scheduled to visit Lee on Friday, Oct. 4.
