HAZARD — Perry Central graduate Braxton Cottongame has concluded his freshman season with the University of Kentucky baseball team. A left-handed pitcher, Cottongame made 17 appearances for the Wildcats during his initial college campaign.
Cottongame pitched 18.1 innings during the 2019 season, recording 15 strikeouts. He finished 0-1 on the mound for the Wildcats.
Kentucky ended the 2019 season 26-29. The Wildcats lost to College World Series qualifier Vanderbilt in the Southeastern Conference Tournament.
Cottongame excelled throughout his high school baseball career. He was a First-Team All-State selection by the Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches Association. Cottongame was the first-ever All-Mountain Baseball Player of the Year. He was ranked the No. 25 left-handed pitcher in the country by Perfect Game and the number 220 player overall. Cottongame was ranked the number 29 left-handed pitcher in the country by Prep Baseball Report and the number 274 player overall.
The Cleveland Indians drafted Cottongame in the 40th round of the 2018 MLB Draft.
Cottongame is expected to take on an bigger role as a pitcher for Kentucky during the 2019 season.
