BUCKHORN — The Perry County Central Lady Commodores remain on top in the 54th District. Perry County Central pounded crosstown rival Hazard 17-5 in five innings in the 54th District Softball Tournament title game at Buckhorn High School on Tuesday.
With the win, Perry County Central improved to 14-14.
Hazard dropped to 15-16 with the loss.
Both Perry County Central and Hazard advance to the 14th Region Softball Tournament.
Perry County Central pitcher Kim Hughes picked up the win in the circle. Hughes surrendered five runs on eight hits over five innings, striking out one and walking one.
Hazard pitcher Mattie Collins suffered the pitching loss. Collins allowed five hits and seven runs over one and one-third innings.
Hazard scored first, plating one run in the top half of the first inning. But Perry County Central answered. The Lady Commodores pushed across six runs in the top half of the first inning. Productive Perry County Central moved ahead and never trailed again.
Perry County Central outhit Hazard 13-8. Hughes, Rachel Feltner and Kaitlyn Grigsby homered for Perry County Central in the convincing victory. As part of a balanced Perry County Central offensive attack, Hughes, Feltner and Grigsby each connected for multiple hits. The versatile Hughes led Perry County Central at the plate, finishing four for four.
Laci Davidson and Kailey Dixon paced Hazard at the plate, providing two hits apiece.
Hazard struggled defensively, committing five errors.
